At AxeUSCE, we understand the complexities faced by clinicians in balancing the demands of patient care with the need for ongoing professional education. To support your educational initiatives, we provide a specialized service for the creation of high-quality, tailored journal club slides designed specifically for your clinical trials.
The AxeUSCE MEPS Analysis Course is crafted for physicians, medical students, and healthcare professionals aiming to enhance their research credentials for U.S. residency and fellowship applications. This in-depth training program focuses on the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), empowering participants to extract, interpret, and analyze comprehensive national health expenditure data. Participants will be trained to utilize MEPS datasets to generate impactful research relevant to public health policy, health economics, and clinical outcomes.
What is the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS)?
MEPS is a set of large-scale surveys conducted across the United States since 1996. It collects nationally representative data on families and individuals, their medical providers, and employers. MEPS captures critical data on healthcare usage, frequency, costs, payment sources, insurance coverage, and more. It comprises two major components:
- Household Component (HC): Focuses on individual-level health, service utilization, cost, satisfaction, and insurance details.
- Insurance Component (IC): Gathers data from employers on insurance offerings, premiums, eligibility, and benefits.
Additionally, MEPS includes supplemental data from providers and historical datasets dating back to earlier surveys from the 1970s and 1980s. MEPS is a powerful tool for generating national and regional healthcare estimates and analyzing trends over time.
The AxeUSCE MEPS Training Course includes:
- Understanding MEPS structure and components (HC, IC, and MPC)
- Accessing and decompressing MEPS datasets
- Navigating and interpreting public use files (PUFs)
- Variable construction (expenditure categories, health status, insurance coverage)
- Panel design interpretation and longitudinal data handling
- Statistical techniques for MEPS data (weighting, variance estimation)
- Performing trend analysis over multiple years
- Applications in healthcare utilization, cost-effectiveness, policy analysis
- Guidance on developing publication-worthy MEPS research projects
Duration: 6 sessions total. Classes are typically held on weekends. Self-paced learning materials and live Zoom-based sessions are available. In-person workshops at hospital sites may also be arranged.
Software Requirement: Access to STATA or R is recommended for full participation.
Prerequisite: Completion of a short Data Use Agreement (DUA) training provided by AHRQ is mandatory prior to enrollment.
